Biology is not hard because the ideas are hard. It is hard because there are so many of them, they all have names, and the exam expects you to connect them. This is a step-by-step way to learn biology with an AI tutor that works from your own textbook and notes — so what you practise is what your course actually tests.
Most students study biology by reading the chapter, highlighting it, reading it again and hoping. Highlighting feels like learning and mostly is not. The method below replaces it with a loop you can run on every chapter: upload, ask, explain back, drill, test, repeat. Each step uses the tutor for one job, and every answer it gives stays inside your material, with the passage it came from shown next to it.
Step 1 — Upload the chapter, not the whole internet
Start with the material you will be examined on: the textbook chapter, the lecture slides, your own notes, the lab handout. Upload them into one subject in iTutor. This matters more in biology than almost anywhere else, because textbooks disagree on detail. One book teaches the cell cycle in four phases, another in five; one calls it the electron transport chain, another the respiratory chain. Your exam uses your book's version. An AI tutor that answers from your upload uses it too, and shows you the lines it used, so you never have to wonder which version you are being taught.
If a chapter is long, upload it whole anyway. The tutor is happier with more context, and you can point it at a section by asking about it.
Step 2 — Ask for the map before the detail
Before you learn anything inside the chapter, ask the tutor to lay out how it is organised: "What are the main sections of this chapter and what question does each one answer?" Biology chapters are usually a sequence of structure → process → regulation → what goes wrong. Seeing that order first gives every later fact a place to sit.
Then generate a mind map from the same upload. The map is not the learning; it is the shelf you put the learning on. Keep it open as you go through the next steps and notice when a term you are drilling does not appear on it — that is usually a term you have not understood yet.
Step 3 — Learn one process as a story
Pick one process — photosynthesis, mitosis, the action potential, whatever the chapter is about — and ask the tutor to walk through it in order, step by step, from your notes. Ask follow-ups on every step you would not be able to explain to a friend: "Why does the membrane depolarise here?", "What happens if this enzyme is missing?" The tutor answers from the material and cites the passage, so a follow-up is never an invitation to invent; if your notes do not cover the answer, it says so, and that is your signal to look it up in the book or ask your teacher.
Switch to Teach mode for this step if you find you are nodding along too easily. In Teach mode the tutor does not explain; it asks you the next step and waits. Being unable to answer is the point.
Step 4 — Explain it back, out loud
The single best test of whether you have learned a biological process is whether you can say it out loud, in order, without looking. Use the voice tutor: tell it the process as you understand it and ask it to correct you against the notes. Speaking exposes the gaps that reading hides — you will find yourself saying "and then… something happens with the ATP" and that is exactly the step to go back to.
Do this for every process in the chapter before you touch a flashcard. Flashcards are for retaining what you understand, not for understanding it.
Step 5 — Drill the vocabulary with flashcards from your notes
Biology has more terms per page than any other school subject. Generate flashcards from the chapter and do two things the default deck does not do for you:
- Delete the cards for terms you already know cold. A deck of 80 cards with 30 you know is a deck that wastes a third of every session.
- Add "why" cards, not just "what" cards. "What is the function of the Golgi apparatus?" is a what-card. "Why would a cell with a damaged Golgi apparatus struggle to secrete proteins?" is a why-card, and it is the one the exam asks.
Because the cards are generated from your material they use your book's terms, and each card can show you the passage it came from. Review them with spaced repetition — a few minutes a day beats an hour the night before, every time.
Step 6 — Draw the thing
Biology exams ask you to label diagrams, and diagrams are also the fastest way to check your own understanding. Draw the structure from memory — a neuron, a nephron, a chloroplast — then compare it against the figure in your notes. Ask the tutor "what is missing from a diagram that has only these parts?" and list what you drew. Missing parts are missing understanding.
Step 7 — Quiz yourself in the exam's format
Generate a quiz from the chapter and make it the kind your exam sets. Multiple-choice if that is what you face; short answer if your papers ask "describe" and "explain"; both if you do not know yet. Take it closed-book and timed. Then read every explanation, including the ones for questions you got right — a right answer for the wrong reason is a wrong answer next week.
The quiz is generated from your upload, so it cannot ask about a mechanism your course skipped, and it will ask about the ones your course stressed. That is the difference between practice that predicts the exam and practice that just feels productive.
Step 8 — Connect the chapter to the last one
Marks in biology cluster at the joins: how respiration relates to photosynthesis, how DNA replication relates to mitosis, how the kidney relates to homeostasis. After each chapter, ask the tutor for the links to the chapters already in your subject: "How does this chapter depend on what we covered about enzymes?" Because all your uploads live in one subject, the tutor can trace those links through your own material and cite both ends.
Step 9 — Sit a practice exam before the real one
Two weeks out, generate a full practice exam from everything in the subject, in the format and length of the real paper. Sit it under real conditions. The result matters less than the breakdown: which chapters, which question types, which "explain why" prompts you answered with a "what". Feed each weak area back into steps 3–7 for that chapter only.
Step 10 — Let the plan carry you to the date
Enter the exam date and let the study plan spread the chapters across the remaining days, weighting the ones you got wrong. The plan exists so that you do not have to decide what to study each evening — deciding is where most revision time disappears. Open it, do the item, close it.
What this looks like in practice
For a typical chapter — say, cellular respiration — the loop takes about three sessions. Session one: upload, map, story, explain back (45 minutes). Session two: flashcards and the diagram (20 minutes, then daily reviews of a few minutes). Session three: the quiz, the links, and a note of what to revisit (30 minutes). That is under two hours per chapter, and the chapter stays learned, which is not something rereading can claim.
Common mistakes this method avoids
- Learning the wrong version. Asking a general chatbot gives you the internet's biology; asking a tutor grounded in your notes gives you your course's biology, with the passage to prove it.
- Memorising before understanding. Flashcards come after the story, never before.
- Passive review. Every step above makes you produce something — an explanation, a drawing, an answer — instead of consuming.
- Studying flat. The plan and the practice exam push the time toward what you get wrong.
A worked example: the nephron in one evening
Suppose the chapter is the kidney. Upload it and ask for the map: filtration, reabsorption, secretion, regulation, then what goes wrong. Ask the tutor to walk you through what happens to a molecule of glucose from the glomerulus onward, step by step, from your notes. Ask why it is reabsorbed in the proximal tubule and not later; the tutor cites the paragraph about transporters, and you have your "why". Draw the nephron from memory, label it, and ask what you left off. Generate twenty flashcards, delete the six you already know, add two why-cards about the loop of Henle. Take a ten-question quiz in your exam's format. Tomorrow you review the cards for four minutes on the bus. That is the whole chapter, learned, in about ninety minutes plus the daily reviews — and every fact traceable to your own book.
Questions students ask

How is this different from just asking a chatbot to explain mitosis? A chatbot explains the internet's mitosis and cannot show you where it got it. A grounded tutor explains your book's mitosis and shows the passage. On the exam, only one of those versions is being marked.
How much time should I spend per chapter? Under two hours spread over three short sessions, plus a few minutes a day of flashcard review. More than that usually means you are rereading instead of producing.
